Staurolite is a common mineral in New Hampshire, particularly in the metamorphosed shists in the western part of the state. | |

Species: STAUROLITE Locality: "Cat Hole Rd." locality, West Side of Green Mtn. Claremont, NH Specimen Size: 8 cm specimen with staurolite crystals embedded in silvery mica schist. Field Collected: Dick Holmes & Eric Green Catalog No.: 1755a Notes: These specimens were obtained from a box-full of "give-aways" from the Keene Mineral Club booth at the 2010 Gilsum Rock Swap. |

Species: STAUROLITE Locality: "Cat Hole Rd." locality, West Side of Green Mtn. Claremont, NH Specimen Size: 3.3 cm staurolite crystal with attached silvery mica schist. Field Collected: Dick Holmes & Eric Green Catalog No.: 1755b Notes: The front facing surface of this crystal is a vertical cleavage revealing the zonned crystal interior. From the light-colored exterior appearance of these crystals, I thought they might be andalusite. An EDS analysis of the lighter colored mineral zone showed it to be staurolite with a minor zinc content. The EDS analysist said "Staurolite scavenges zinc during formation." The orange-brown interior of the crystal is more typical of an expected staurolite coloration. This glassy orange-brown material has yet to be analyzed. One may wonder if the staurorite metamorphic process that formed these crystals was only partially completed, or is the zoning due to an alteration process of previously fully formed crystals? |

Species: STAUROLITE Locality: "Cat Hole Rd." locality, West Side of Green Mtn. Claremont, NH Specimen Size: Complete, 3.7 cm staurolite crystal. Iron staining on right side. Field Collected: Dick Holmes & Eric Green Catalog No.: 1755c Notes: |

Species: STAUROLITE Locality: "Cat Hole Rd." locality, West Side of Green Mtn. Claremont, NH Specimen Size: 2 cm staurolite crystal cross-section. Field Collected: Dick Holmes & Eric Green Catalog No.: 1755d Notes: The EDS analysis material for this locality was sampled from a glassy-gray area of this specimen. |

Species: STAUROLITE Locality: Hemlock Center locality, Charlestown, NH Specimen Size: 5.5 cm specimen Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: 838 Notes: This is a Phillip Morrill locality |
|
Species: STAUROLITE Locality: Hemlock Center locality, Charlestown, NH Specimen Size: 4.2 cm complete staurolite crystal with minor schist matrix at bottom. Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: Notes: Staurolite crystals from this locality are quite crude and have little contrast with the schist matrix. |
|
Species: STAUROLITE Locality: Power line area north of Dyke Rd., Sugar Hill, NH Specimen Size: 4.2 cm complete staurolite crystal in dark matrix with small garnets. Field Collected: Tom Mortimer Catalog No.: 973 Notes: The staurolite crystals from this locality are quite hard and glassy, but difficult to fully expose in the matrix. |
